The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans targeted figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
