Individuals Coming Off Slimming Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs must be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

These medications copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

The NHS recommend the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.

This challenge is worsened if patients have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, experts emphasize that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
